Thoughts From The Start Of The Braxton Miller Era In Columbus

If you were to tell me a week ago that Ohio State would follow its embarrassing loss in Miami with a 20-point win over Colorado in which Braxton Miller would not only start but throw for two touchdowns, I would have taken it in a heartbeat. But while that’s exactly what happened, something still felt off when it came to the Buckeyes today, especially on the offensive side of the ball. Technically, Saturday marked the start of the Miller era at OSU, but will we ever see Miller truly unleashed this season? Or is 5-13 passing performances complimenting a run-based offense what we should be getting used to with No. 5 under center? Continue reading

Watch Perhaps The Coolest Moment In The History Of Ohio Bobcat Football

Admittedly, I’m far from an expert when it comes to Ohio University football. Throughout the two falls I spent in Athens, Ohio, I attended three Bobcat games, including a win over Gardner-Webb and losses (albeit near-wins) to Virginia Tech (2007) and Ohio State (2008).

But while my knowledge of Bobcat football might be limited, what I do know is that this video, of the team finding out about the black uniforms that it later debuted in a 44-7 win over Marshall, is pretty damn cool.

Is There A Conspiracy Behind Braxton Miller’s First Start At Ohio State?

Earlier today, Ohio State coach Luke Fickell announced that Braxton Miller would be making his first career start for the Buckeyes when they take on Colorado this Saturday in The Shoe. While many (myself included) think that this was the right decision for Fickell to make, was it done for the right reasons? Continue reading

Thoughts From The Buckeyes Loss To The Miami Hurricanes

After 10 months of controversy off the field, you just knew that it was going to eventually affect Ohio State on the field. You may have been in denial about it or you may have tried to convince yourself that the team’s “shock the world” and “us against the world” mentality would prove to be a good thing, but if you were actually being honest, you knew that a disastrous showing was inevitable. Last night, the inevitable happened, as everything that could go wrong, did go wrong, as the Buckeyes lost to the Miami Hurricanes 24-6. Continue reading

Ohio State Unveils Buckeyes’ 2011 Pro Combat Jerseys

Looking back at my awkward days as an 8th grader, two trends stick out: trucker hats and throwback jerseys. And while there was nothing cooler to 8th grade me than someone wearing an Austin Carr jersey to a Cavs game or Fabolous‘ aptly titled “Throwback,” the concept of actual teams wearing throwback jerseys seemed strange to me.

Now don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing I love more than seeing the Patriots bust out their red unis or the Chargers going with the powder blues, but what I worry about is 20 years from now. How are we going to explain to our kids images like Michael Jordan in a Washington Bullets jersey or Kobe Bryant in a Minneapolis Lakers jersey? Our kids are going to have a warped sense of sports history and think that Jordan and Kobe each had careers that lasted 40+ years. Continue reading

Thoughts From The Buckeyes Near-Loss To Toledo

After controversy struck the Ohio State football program late last December, the Buckeyes adopted the motto “shock the world.” I’m going to go out on a limb and say that the mantra meant that OSU wanted to “shock the world” by improbably overcoming the turmoil, and not by losing to its first in-state opponent in 90 years. Continue reading

Thoughts From The Buckeyes Win Over Akron And The Start Of The Luke Fickell Era

The Luke Fickell era at Ohio State began on Saturday, and as I successfully predicted last week, nothing about it was predictable. The Buckeyes beat the Akron Zips 42-0, but while a blowout win over a MAC opponent who was 1-11 a year ago may have been imaginable, the way in which OSU accomplished it was not. Joe Bauserman scored the first touchdown of the season with a shocking 15-yard scramble off of a broken play and Jake Stoenburner became the first true OSU tight end to score three touchdowns in a single game. Like I said before, it was only Akron that the Buckeyes beat, but that’s not enough to stop me from jumping to some conclusions when it comes to the 2011 Buckeyes.

Three More Buckeyes Suspended For The Season Opener

A mere few hours after I posted my Ohio State football 2011 season preview, at least two sections of the post were rendered moot as news broke that in addition to the five players who are already suspended for this weekend’s season-opener against Akron, three more Buckeyes have been ruled ineligible to play the Zips.

OSU announced today that it found that running back Jordan Hall, and defensive backs Travis Howard and Corey “Pittsburgh” Brown received impermissable benefits that were valued under $300 at a charity event earlier this year.

Both Hall and Howard were scheduled to start this weekend, while Brown is a reserve. The loss of Hall leaves the Buckeyes with two scholarship running backs in Carlos Hyde and Rod Smith- neither of which have very much in-game experience at the college level, while Howard will be replaced in the lineup by sophomore Dominic Clarke.

But while the loss of three players will have a minimal on-field effect for the Buckeyes, as their opponent still is indeed Akron, the effect the suspensions have off-the-field could be greater. It had been a relatively long time since the Buckeyes had been in the news for negative reasons and with the NCAA still reviewing the OSU case before handing down its punishment, the last thing the program needed was anything to help legitimize claims that OSU has lacked institutional control, a claim which is appearing to be harder and harder to disprove.

2011 Ohio State Football Season Preview

Since I started Axelrod Sports on January 31 of this year, I’ve posted 18 stories about Ohio State football, three of which kind of dealt with actual on-the-field matters (two signing day stories and one about the NFL Draft). Kind of like watching a wrestling program that is front-loaded with interviews and then being caught off-guard when an actual match begins, it wasn’t until I saw this Saturday’s season opener against Akron on the schedule that I was reminded that the Buckeyes do in fact compete in actual football games.

Under former coach Jim Tressel, it was pretty easy to figure out where each OSU team stood in the college football landscape before each season. Their expectations have either been to be BCS Championship contenders (’03, ’05, ’06, ’08, ’10), BCS bowl game contenders (’02, ’07, ’09), or to be rebuilding (’01, ’04). Sometimes they would exceed expectations (’02, ’07) and sometimes they would disappoint (’03, ’05, ’08), but you always had an idea of where the Buckeyes should’ve wound up each January.

This year? We have no f’n clue. Continue reading

R.I.P. Miami Hurricanes Football: 1926-2011

For better or worse (and as a sports fan, I tend to feel the latter), Yahoo! Sports’ Dan Wetzel and Charles Robinson have become the Woodward and Bernstein of the college football world over the past few years.

But when Wetzel and Robinson investigated Ohio State earlier this year, their finding only implicated coach Jim Tressel. Ditto for their work regarding Oregon and Chip Kelly. Even when they investigated USC from 2006-2010, the investigation only implicated the athletic department  for improprieties regarding two players in separate sports. The University of Miami can only wish to have been so lucky. Continue reading
